6/26/2023 0 Comments Jamaica inn goodreads![]() ![]() The male characters featured are all flawed and unlikeable. The scenes with the wreckers especially was shocking and you learn so much about the evil horrors of that trade, which I did not know of until I read this book. With domestic abuse, murder, torture and smuggling, all held within the pages of the book. It really is quite a violent book, which I didn’t expect, especially when I compare it to du Maurier’s other books that I have read. The weather throughout the novel also plays such a big part, creating the tense atmosphere warning you of danger to come. The Inn itself felt like its own character, lurking menacingly in the background. It made me think strongly of some of the Bronte sisters books, Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, with similar gothic vibes appearing throughout the story. From the opening chapter it felt very heavy and atmospheric. This was my third book I have read by the famous author, Daphne du Maurier and I have had the pleasure of reading it with some lovely bookstagrammers and book was moody and dark. Before long she will be forced to cross her own moral line to save herself… ![]() The inn is a front for a lawless gang of criminals, and Mary is unwillingly dragged into their dangerous world of smuggling and murder. No matter what engages his considerable energy, the boy comes across as eager and upbeat, often flashing a wide-mouthed smile that takes up much of his little round head. He feeds the doll, cooks and reads for it, takes care of its boo-boo, and even stops for a sidewalk gab with a female peer while his "baby" sleeps in a stroller and hers dozes in a toy buggy. Most of the play enables the boy to fill non-gender specific parental roles. In the first, he and some friends gather around a wading pool watching their dolls float (or in the case of one doll, sink). The line "Time for swim class./ Time to slide./ Time for stopping./ Time to ride" finds the boy engaged in four different backyard activities, one per page. Milgrim divvies up the day into discrete "times," thereby attributing adult-level importance to each activity. Readers follow a boy and his trusty doll from waking (before the rest of the house, of course) to bedtime. ![]() ![]() ![]() , a concise rhyming text here depicts an unnamed child in a series of slice-of-life events. ![]() 6/25/2023 0 Comments Home Alone 2 by Kim Smith![]() ![]() “Celebrates the classic movie with delightful illustrations that make it stand out from the film all while complimenting it.” - Cracking the Cover “The holiday picture book of the season.”- Dad Suggests Kim lives in Calgary, Alberta with her dog, Whisky, and husband, Eric.
