The scenes with the wreckers especially was shocking and you learn so much about the evil horrors of that trade, which I did not know of until I read this book. With domestic abuse, murder, torture and smuggling, all held within the pages of the book. It really is quite a violent book, which I didn’t expect, especially when I compare it to du Maurier’s other books that I have read. The weather throughout the novel also plays such a big part, creating the tense atmosphere warning you of danger to come. The Inn itself felt like its own character, lurking menacingly in the background. It made me think strongly of some of the Bronte sisters books, Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, with similar gothic vibes appearing throughout the story. From the opening chapter it felt very heavy and atmospheric. This was my third book I have read by the famous author, Daphne du Maurier and I have had the pleasure of reading it with some lovely bookstagrammers and book was moody and dark.
